Job Summary

Voyager Africa Line is seeking a dedicated and skilled Assistant Chef to join our onboard culinary team. As an Assistant Chef, you will support the head chef in preparing and delivering high-quality meals to passengers and crew, ensuring every dining experience on board meets the highest standards of taste, presentation, and hygiene. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about culinary arts and interested in gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic cruise ship environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the head chef and kitchen staff in daily meal preparation, cooking, and plating.

  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness and sanitation in compliance with maritime health and safety regulations.

  • Prepare ingredients by chopping, slicing, and measuring according to recipes.

  • Monitor inventory levels and assist in receiving and storing food supplies.

  • Assist in menu planning and ensure timely execution of meals for passengers and crew.

  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Support special dietary requirements and accommodate guest requests.

  • Collaborate with team members to maintain a smooth workflow and high-quality service standards.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Culinary training or certification from a recognized institution is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen operations.

  • Understanding of hygiene and safety standards in a professional kitchen.

  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods and handle kitchen duties in a marine environment.

Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a professional kitchen or catering environment preferred.

  • Experience in cruise ship kitchens or hospitality settings is an advantage but not mandatory.

Working Hours

  • Full-time, rotational shifts according to cruise schedules.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as per ship operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of international cuisines and menu preparation.

  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

  • Adaptability to the unique challenges of a cruise ship environment, including space constraints and safety protocols.

  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to high-quality service.
