Job Summary

Rand Water is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Principal Survey Assistant to coordinate and oversee field survey activities. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the planning, execution, and quality control of surveys related to water infrastructure and operational projects. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, organizational skills, and strong communication abilities to ensure accurate data collection and reporting, ultimately contributing to the efficient management of Rand Water’s assets and projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, plan, and execute field survey activities across multiple sites in alignment with project objectives.

  • Assist senior survey engineers in conducting topographical, hydrological, and geospatial surveys.

  • Ensure accurate measurement, recording, and documentation of survey data.

  • Verify and maintain survey instruments, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.

  • Support data analysis and preparation of survey reports for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Liaise with project teams, contractors, and local authorities to facilitate survey operations.

  • Enforce safety and compliance standards during all fieldwork activities.

  • Identify and troubleshoot field challenges, recommending practical solutions.

  • Maintain an organized repository of survey records, maps, and technical documentation.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • National Diploma or Higher Certificate in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles, techniques, and equipment.

  • Proficiency in GIS, AutoCAD, and other survey-related software.

  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple field sites.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in field surveying, civil engineering projects, or related disciplines.

  • Prior experience in coordinating field survey teams and managing survey data is highly desirable.

  • Exposure to water infrastructure or municipal projects will be an advantage.

Working Hours

  • Full-time role with standard office hours, typically Monday to Friday.

  • Flexibility required for fieldwork, which may include early mornings or occasional extended hours.

  • In-depth understanding of surveying equipment, methods, and safety protocols.

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, maps, and plans accurately.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in field conditions.

  • Competence in data analysis and presentation of technical findings.
