Job Summary

Rand Water is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to oversee the maintenance and operational efficiency of our water treatment and distribution plants. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the mechanical integrity, reliability, and optimal performance of plant equipment, while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and supporting the organization’s mission of delivering safe and reliable water.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage mechanical maintenance activities for all plant equipment, including pumps, motors, turbines, pipelines, and HVAC systems.

  • Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to minimize downtime and maximize equipment efficiency.

  • Oversee plant operations to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.

  • Conduct mechanical inspections, root cause analysis, and troubleshooting to resolve equipment failures.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, process engineers, and operations staff, to optimize plant performance.

  • Prepare and manage maintenance schedules, budgets, and procurement plans for mechanical parts and equipment.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians to enhance their technical capabilities.

  • Ensure documentation of maintenance activities, reports, and compliance records are accurate and up-to-date.

  • Support projects related to plant upgrades, retrofits, and installation of new mechanical systems.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification or equivalent is preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems in water treatment, pumping stations, and industrial plants.

  • Proficiency in maintenance management software (CMMS) and technical documentation.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and team management abilities.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in mechanical engineering within industrial, municipal, or water treatment environments.

  • Proven track record in plant maintenance, operations, and project management.

  • Experience leading maintenance teams and managing mechanical reliability programs.

Working Hours

  • Standard office hours with flexibility required for plant operations support, emergencies, or shift rotation as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of water treatment plant operations, mechanical equipment, and plant safety regulations.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Capacity to analyze complex technical issues and implement effective solutions.
