Job Summary:

Rand Water is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our Water Quality division. This entry-level role focuses on the collection, preparation, and analysis of water samples to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards. The ideal candidate will have a passion for science, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining accurate records and laboratory practices. Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, label, and handle water samples from various sources for laboratory testing.

  • Conduct basic chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses on water samples following standard operating procedures.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory records and logs.

  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and test equipment in accordance with laboratory protocols.

  • Assist in calibrating, cleaning, and maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards in the laboratory.

  • Support senior laboratory staff with ongoing projects and research initiatives.

  • Report any irregularities or discrepancies in test results to the supervisor.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Microbiology, or related field.

  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety and hygiene practices.

  • Basic knowledge of water quality testing methods and laboratory procedures.

  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.

  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work independently or as part of a team.

  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal).

Experience:

  • Entry-level position – prior laboratory experience or internships are advantageous but not mandatory.

Working Hours:

  • Full-time position with standard office hours, Monday to Friday.

  • Flexibility may be required depending on field sample collection schedules.

  • Proficient in handling laboratory instruments and basic analytical tools.

  • Competent in data recording, analysis, and reporting.
