Job Summary

Progressive Technology is seeking a Virtual Database Administrator (DBA) with specialized expertise in PostgreSQL performance optimization to join our dynamic remote IT operations team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and scaling PostgreSQL databases that support mission-critical applications for our clients worldwide. You will work closely with developers, system administrators, and DevOps engineers to ensure high availability, data security, and performance efficiency across all environments. Key Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, and tune PostgreSQL databases to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability.

• Perform query optimization, indexing, and database partitioning to enhance system efficiency.

• Plan and execute regular database upgrades, migrations, and patches with minimal downtime.

• Design and implement backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies.

• Collaborate with software engineers to analyze application queries and recommend database improvements.

• Monitor database performance metrics using advanced tools and proactively identify potential bottlenecks.

• Automate database maintenance tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash).

• Manage database access, roles, and permissions while ensuring compliance with security policies.

• Document database configurations, policies, and maintenance procedures.

• Provide 24/7 on-call support on a rotational basis for critical production environments.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

• Proven experience in PostgreSQL administration and performance tuning in production environments.

• Strong understanding of SQL query optimization, database indexing, and partitioning.

• Familiarity with replication, clustering, and high availability (HA) setups such as Patroni or pgpool-II.

• Hands-on experience with database monitoring tools (e.g., pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, Grafana).

• Working knowledge of Linux/Unix-based systems and shell scripting.

• Understanding of database security principles and role-based access control.

• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting abilities.

• Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in remote settings.

Experience

• Minimum 4–8 years of experience as a Database Administrator, preferably focusing on PostgreSQL.

• Experience with cloud-hosted databases (AWS RDS, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud SQL) is highly desirable.

• Exposure to automation and DevOps tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Jenkins will be an added advantage.

Working Hours

• Full-time, Remote Position

• Flexible working hours with some overlap required with US/Europe time zones for team collaboration.

• Availability for emergency support and scheduled maintenance during off-peak hours as needed.
