Job Summary
HR Talent Solutions is seeking a highly detail-oriented and self-motivated Independent Proofreader – Academic & Legal to support our growing portfolio of scholarly, research, and legal documentation projects. This remote, independent role is ideal for professionals who excel at ensuring linguistic accuracy, formatting consistency, and compliance with academic and legal standards. The successful candidate will play a critical role in maintaining the integrity, clarity, and professionalism of client deliverables.
Key Responsibilities

Proofread academic papers, research manuscripts, legal briefs, contracts, and related documents for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax accuracy.

Ensure adherence to style guides such as APA, MLA, Chicago, Bluebook, and client-specific requirements.

Verify formatting consistency, citations, references, and document structure.

Identify and correct typographical, contextual, and formatting errors while preserving the author’s voice.

Collaborate with editors, legal teams, and academic clients to clarify ambiguities when necessary.

Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive academic and legal materials.

Manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.

Provide constructive feedback to improve document clarity and readability.
Required Skills and Qualifications

Exceptional command of written English, including grammar and usage.

Strong knowledge of academic and/or legal writing conventions.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and track changes functionality.

Familiarity with major citation and style guides (APA, MLA, Chicago, Bluebook preferred).

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Experience

Minimum 2+ years of professional proofreading experience in academic, legal, or publishing environments.

Demonstrated experience working with scholarly articles, dissertations, legal documents, or compliance materials preferred.

Prior freelance or remote proofreading experience is an advantage.
