Job Summary
Fresher Jobs Hub is hiring an experienced Senior Bookkeeper who can also operate as a high‑performing Virtual Assistant to support an Australian bookkeeping & advisory firm. You will own end‑to‑end bookkeeping, payroll, compliance (BAS/IAS/STP), and month‑end reporting for a portfolio of SME clients while coordinating calendars, documentation, and workflow for the firm’s partners. This is a work‑from‑home, client‑facing role that requires deep knowledge of Australian accounting standards, GST, payroll legislation, and cloud accounting tools (primarily Xero and MYOB).
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Compliance
- Full-cycle bookkeeping: bank feeds, reconciliations, AR/AP, journals, accruals, and prepayments.
- Prepare and lodge BAS/IAS, TPAR, PAYG withholding, and superannuation.
- Manage Single Touch Payroll (STP) processing, EOFY finalisations, and superannuation compliance.
- Process and review payroll (awards, overtime, leave loading, terminations, redundancies).
- Month-end and quarter-end close: trial balance review, workpapers, variance analysis, and management reports.
- Maintain fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules.
- Assist with cash flow forecasting, budgets, and KPI dashboards.
Client & Internal Coordination (Virtual Assistant)
- Be the day-to-day point of contact for client queries; triage requests and ensure SLAs are met.
- Set up and maintain workflow boards, job trackers, and deadlines in Karbon / XPM / Asana / Trello.
- Prepare engagement letters, onboarding packs, and maintain client documentation and SOPs.
- Coordinate calendars, schedule client meetings, prepare agendas and follow-up action logs.
- Ensure data collection via Dext, Hubdoc, FYI Docs, Google Drive/OneDrive is complete, timely, and accurate.
- Produce high-quality internal and client-facing presentations, summaries, and process docs.
Quality, Controls & Improvement
- Implement best-practice reconciliations, checklists, and review processes.
- Identify process gaps and automate repetitive tasks using Xero add-ons / APIs / Zapier / Power Query.
- Monitor KPIs: WIP recovery, on-time lodgements, first-pass accuracy, and client NPS.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency in Xero (mandatory); MYOB/QBO experience a plus.
- Strong understanding of Australian GST, BAS/IAS, STP, superannuation, PAYG, payroll awards.
- Excellent Excel / Google Sheets skills (pivot tables, lookups, Power Query desirable).
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple client files, deadlines, and stakeholders remotely.
- Clear, concise written and verbal communication in English suitable for client-facing work.
- High attention to detail with a “reviewer’s eye” for catching anomalies before they reach the client.
- Comfortable working with workflow tools (e.g., Karbon, Xero Practice Manager, Asana, ClickUp).
- Ability to create and maintain SOPs, checklists, and templates.
Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on Australian bookkeeping & payroll experience, including BAS/IAS preparation.
- Prior experience in an Australian bookkeeping/accounting practice is strongly preferred.
- Experience servicing multiple SMEs across different industries.
- Prior remote/WFH experience with structured workflows and SLAs is advantageous.
- (Nice to have) Exposure to basic tax compliance support (collating files for the tax team, not tax prep).
Working Hours
- Remote / Work From Home.
- Core collaboration window to overlap with AEST/AEDT (e.g., 9:00 am – 5:00 pm AEST); some flexibility is possible.
- Peak periods around month-end, quarter-end (BAS), and EOFY will require heightened availability.

- Ability to work autonomously, prioritise effectively, and escalate risks early.
