Job Summary

Varsity Tutors is seeking a passionate and skilled Virtual Reading Specialist – Elementary Level to join our dynamic online education team. In this role, you will provide personalized reading instruction and literacy support to elementary students in a virtual setting. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in early literacy development, phonics instruction, and reading comprehension strategies. You will work closely with parents, teachers, and education professionals to help students build confidence, fluency, and a lifelong love of reading—all from the comfort of your home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate virtual reading lessons for elementary students.

  • Assess students’ reading levels, identify learning gaps, and create tailored intervention plans.

  • Utilize evidence-based literacy instruction techniques including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

  • Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback and progress reports to parents and educators.

  • Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and individual student needs.

  • Maintain accurate student records and ensure timely communication with families.

  • Participate in ongoing professional development sessions and collaborative team meetings.

  • Foster an inclusive, encouraging, and interactive virtual learning environment.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading/Literacy, English, or a related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Valid teaching certification or Reading Specialist endorsement (preferred).

  • Strong knowledge of early literacy development and reading intervention strategies.

  • Proficiency with virtual teaching tools and digital learning platforms.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to motivate, engage, and connect with young learners online.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of teaching experience at the elementary level, preferably in reading or literacy-focused roles.

  • Prior experience with virtual or hybrid instruction is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, or Fountas & Pinnell is a plus.

Working Hours

  • Flexible schedule based on student availability and assigned sessions.

  • Part-time or full-time options available.

  • Must be available to conduct virtual sessions during after-school hours or weekends, depending on student needs.
