Job Description

Job Summary

The Deckhand – Passenger Area and Deck Maintenance Operative is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of passenger decks and exterior areas onboard a cruise ship. This role ensures that all public deck spaces are presented to the highest standards, providing a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for guests. The position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to maritime safety and hospitality standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clean, maintain, and sanitize all passenger deck areas, including walkways, seating areas, and recreational spaces
  • Assist in the upkeep of ship exterior structures such as railings, decks, and fixtures
  • Ensure all safety equipment on deck is properly maintained and accessible
  • Perform routine inspections of deck areas to identify hazards or maintenance needs
  • Support docking and undocking operations under supervision of senior crew
  • Assist in waste management and disposal according to maritime regulations
  • Report maintenance issues, safety concerns, or equipment malfunctions promptly
  • Assist passengers when required, maintaining a professional and courteous attitude
  • Follow all shipboard safety procedures, including emergency response protocols

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Basic education (High School Diploma or equivalent preferred)
  • Basic understanding of cleaning and maintenance procedures
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision
  • Strong physical fitness and ability to work in outdoor marine environments
  • Good communication skills in English (additional languages are an advantage)
  • Awareness of health and safety practices onboard ships
  • Team-oriented mindset with a positive attitude

Experience

  • Prior experience in cleaning, housekeeping, facilities maintenance, or hospitality is preferred but not mandatory
  • Entry-level candidates are welcome; training will be provided onboard

Working Hours

  • Rotational shifts based on ship schedule
  • Typically 8–12 hours per day depending on voyage and operational requirements
  • 7-day work week during contract periods with scheduled rest breaks
  • Contract duration varies between 4 to 9 months depending on assignment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals and safe usage practices
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural maritime environment
  • Strong sense of responsibility and discipline
  • Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions
  • Good teamwork and adaptability onboard a moving vessel
  • Understanding of basic maritime safety procedures is an advantage
