Job Description

Job Summary

Rand Water is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to support water sample testing and quality analysis within its laboratory operations. This entry-level role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about environmental science, water quality, and laboratory procedures. The successful candidate will assist in routine sample collection, preparation, testing, and documentation to ensure compliance with strict water quality standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the collection, labeling, and preparation of water samples for laboratory testing
  • Conduct basic physical, chemical, and microbiological tests under supervision
  • Maintain accurate records of test results and laboratory documentation
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of samples and chemicals
  • Calibrate and clean laboratory equipment and instruments regularly
  • Support senior laboratory technicians and scientists in daily testing activities
  • Follow strict health, safety, and environmental regulations in the laboratory
  • Report any anomalies or deviations in test results to supervisors promptly

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate (essential)
  • Diploma or certificate in Laboratory Technology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or related field (advantageous)
  • Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and water quality testing
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Office applications)

Experience

  • Entry-level position – 0 to 1 year laboratory or internship experience preferred
  • Prior exposure to water testing, environmental labs, or academic lab work will be beneficial

Working Hours

  • Full-time position (Monday to Friday)
  • May require occasional weekend or shift work depending on laboratory demands
  • Standard working hours: 08:00 – 16:30
