Job Summary
Rand Water is seeking an experienced and technically driven Pipelines Operations Engineer – Mechanical / Civil to support the planning, execution, maintenance, and optimization of large-scale water infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, integrity, and operational efficiency of pipeline systems, pumping stations, valves, reservoirs, and associated mechanical and civil infrastructure.
This role requires a professional who can combine engineering expertise, project management capability, and operational leadership to deliver infrastructure projects safely, on schedule, and within budget while meeting regulatory and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Pipeline Operations & Maintenance

Monitor the performance, reliability, and condition of bulk water pipeline infrastructure.

Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs for mechanical and civil assets.

Coordinate inspections, pressure testing, integrity assessments, and pipeline diagnostics.

Investigate operational failures, leakages, pressure losses, and structural defects.
Project Engineering

Plan, design, and manage pipeline rehabilitation, upgrade, and expansion projects.

Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documentation.

Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and internal engineering teams during project execution.

Ensure adherence to project scope, timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
Mechanical & Civil Systems Management

Oversee pumps, valves, pipe supports, structural systems, chambers, and associated infrastructure.

Evaluate system performance and recommend engineering improvements.

Support commissioning and handover of newly completed infrastructure projects.
Compliance & Safety
-
Ensure compliance with engineering regulations, environmental standards, and occupational safety requirements.

Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.

Ensure all engineering documentation is properly maintained.
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

Prepare engineering reports, technical analyses, and project updates.

Present operational recommendations to management.

Collaborate with municipal stakeholders, contractors, and service providers.
Required Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related engineering discipline.

Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa is advantageous.

Project Management certification will be beneficial.

Strong understanding of water utility infrastructure and pipeline systems.

Proficiency in engineering software, asset management systems, and technical reporting.
Experience

Minimum 5–8 years of relevant engineering experience.

Proven experience in:

Pipeline operations

Mechanical systems maintenance

Civil infrastructure projects

Utility or water sector engineering

Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering projects is highly preferred.
Working Hours

Standard working schedule: 40–45 hours per week

Monday to Friday

May require:

Emergency call-outs

Weekend maintenance support

Site visits to operational facilities

Travel to project sites when required
