Job Description

Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Plant Maintenance and Operations is responsible for leading the mechanical engineering function within large-scale water treatment and distribution facilities. The role ensures optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of mechanical systems, including pumps, pipelines, valves, and associated infrastructure. The incumbent will provide technical leadership, oversee maintenance strategies, and support continuous improvement initiatives to ensure uninterrupted water supply services.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and optimization of mechanical maintenance strategies across water treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Ensure the reliability and availability of critical mechanical assets, including pumps, motors, compressors, and piping systems.
  • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Oversee shutdown planning, inspections, repairs, and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for complex mechanical failures.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, cost control, and asset lifecycle planning.
  • Supervise and mentor mechanical engineers, technicians, and artisans.
  • Collaborate with operations, electrical, and civil engineering teams to ensure integrated plant performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and reliability-centered maintenance practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng/BSc or equivalent).
  • Professional registration with a recognized engineering council (e.g., Pr. Eng or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems in industrial or water infrastructure environments.
  • Proficiency in maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Strong understanding of hydraulics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
  • Knowledge of safety standards (OHS, ISO standards, and engineering compliance frameworks).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.

Experience

  • Minimum 8–12 years of experience in mechanical engineering within plant maintenance, utilities, water treatment, or heavy industry.
  • At least 3–5 years in a supervisory or senior engineering role.
  • Proven experience managing large-scale mechanical infrastructure and maintenance teams.
  • Experience in reliability engineering and asset management is highly advantageous.

Working Hours

  • Full-time position (Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00).
  • May require standby duties, overtime, and emergency call-outs depending on operational requirements.
  • Occasional site visits and fieldwork in plant environments.

  • Strong mechanical engineering design and troubleshooting capability.
  • Expertise in plant maintenance planning and execution.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering reports.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Excellent decision-making and risk assessment abilities.
  • Strong focus on safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
