This entry-level role is ideal for recent graduates (or early-career professionals) in Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or related disciplines who want to build a career ensuring safe, reliable water for the communities we serve. You will assist with sample receipt and preparation, routine analyses under supervision, strict adherence to quality systems (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025), data capture in LIMS, and general laboratory housekeeping and safety compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample handling & chain of custody: Receive, log, label, and preserve water samples according to SOPs and regulatory requirements.

  • Sample preparation: Filter, digest, aliquot, and otherwise prepare samples for chemical and microbiological testing.

  • Routine testing support: Perform (under supervision) basic wet chemistry, microbiological enumeration, and instrumental prep steps (e.g., standards/reagents).

  • LIMS & documentation: Enter and verify test results, maintain worksheets, calibration logs, and ensure full traceability.

  • Quality assurance: Follow QA/QC protocols, participate in proficiency checks, run blanks, standards, and duplicates as instructed.

  • Equipment care: Clean, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; promptly report faults.

  • Health, safety & environment (HSE): Comply with PPE, chemical handling, waste disposal, and biosafety procedures.

  • Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organised, and contamination‑free laboratory workspace.

  • Logistics support: Assist with sample collections, courier coordination, and cold-chain maintenance when required.

  • Continuous improvement: Contribute to SOP updates, non-conformance investigations, and corrective/preventive actions.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • National Diploma/Degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.

  • Solid understanding of basic laboratory techniques, glassware handling, and safe chemical/microbial practices.

  • Computer literacy: MS Office (Excel/Word) and familiarity with databases or LIMS (advantageous).

  • Strong numeracy, accuracy, and record‑keeping skills.

  • Ability to follow SOPs, work instructions, and quality standards meticulously.

  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Physical readiness to stand for extended periods, lift light to moderate loads, and work in temperature‑controlled environments.

Experience

  • 0–1 year of laboratory experience (internships, in-service training, or university lab work count).

  • Exposure to ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environments is an advantage but not mandatory.

  • Experience with sample logging, LIMS, or QA/QC procedures is beneficial.

Working Hours

  • 40 hours per week (typical).

  • Shift/rotational work, weekends, and public holidays may be required to support 24/7 plant and compliance testing demands.

  • Overtime may be required during incident response, peak sampling periods, or regulatory deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of water quality parameters (physico-chemical and microbiological) and their public health relevance.

  • Basic understanding of analytical methods (e.g., titrations, spectrophotometry, membrane filtration, plate counts).

  • Familiarity with good laboratory practice (GLP) and quality control concepts.

  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and prioritisation skills in a high-throughput environment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and take constructive feedback.

  • Commitment to safety, ethics, and environmental stewardship.

Benefits

  • Structured onboarding and technical training with mentorship from experienced laboratory professionals.

  • Exposure to ISO/IEC 17025 quality systems, preparing you for progressive laboratory roles.

  • Career growth pathways into Laboratory Technician/Analyst, Quality, or Process Operations roles.

  • Competitive salary, leave benefits, and retirement/medical plan options (as per company policy).

  • Access to continuous professional development and internal mobility opportunities.

  • Inclusive, purpose-driven culture focused on public health, compliance, and sustainability.
