You will be responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, planning and implementing individualized nursing care plans, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring optimal use of advanced life-support technology, and advocating for patients and their families during the most vulnerable moments of care. This role demands clinical excellence, emotional resilience, meticulous attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to patient safety and quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced clinical assessments, continuous monitoring, and timely interventions for critically ill adult patients (e.g., respiratory failure, sepsis, post‑operative complications, multi‑organ dysfunction).

  • Initiate, manage, and titrate ICU therapies and devices: mechanical ventilation (invasive & non-invasive), vasoactive infusions, haemodynamic monitoring, renal replacement therapy, and other life-support modalities per protocol and physician orders.

  • Administer medications safely (including high-alert and continuous infusions), calculate dosages, and document accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., code blues, rapid response activations) and participate in stabilization and resuscitation according to ACLS/BLS standards.

  • Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team (intensivists, anaesthetists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians) to develop and execute holistic care plans.

  • Educate and support patients’ families, providing clear communication, psychosocial support, and involvement in decision-making where appropriate.

  • Maintain strict infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, including isolation protocols, central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention bundles.

  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation, incident reporting, handovers, and adherence to Mediclinic clinical governance and quality standards.

  • Participate in audits, morbidity & mortality reviews, quality improvement projects, and continuous professional development (CPD) activities.

  • Precept, mentor, and coach junior nurses and students, fostering a culture of learning and excellence.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Nurse with the relevant national regulatory body (e.g., SANC registration if South Africa-based) in good standing.

  • Post-basic/advanced qualification in Critical Care/ICU Nursing (Adult) preferred/required (as per site requirement).

  • BLS and ACLS certifications (current and valid).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in:

    • Advanced haemodynamic monitoring and interpretation

    • Ventilator management and weaning strategies

    • Vasoactive medication administration and titration

    • Renal replacement therapy (CRRT/HD) principles

    • Pain, sedation, and delirium management protocols

  • Solid understanding of evidence-based ICU protocols, patient safety standards, and clinical governance frameworks.

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to function effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.

  • Computer literacy and proficiency with EMR and ICU monitoring systems.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of recent experience in an Adult ICU/Critical Care environment is strongly preferred.

  • Exposure to complex, multi-system ICU cases (surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro) is an advantage.

  • Experience in clinical mentoring, preceptorship, or charge/shift leadership will be beneficial.

Working Hours

  • Full-time, shift-based role (typically 12-hour day/night shifts).

  • Weekends, public holidays, and on-call/standby duties as per unit roster.

  • Flexibility to cover overtime and short-notice shifts when patient acuity or census demands.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of critical care pathophysiology, invasive and non-invasive monitoring, and ICU pharmacology.

  • High level of clinical judgment, prioritization, and decision-making under pressure.

  • Strong advocacy for patient rights, dignity, and ethical care, including end-of-life decision support.

  • Detail-oriented approach to documentation, medication safety, and compliance with policies.

  • Emotional intelligence and resilience, with proven coping strategies for compassion fatigue and burnout.

  • Commitment to lifelong learning, research utilization, and continuous improvement.

Benefits

  • Competitive, market-aligned salary and shift allowances.

  • Comprehensive benefits package (medical aid/health insurance, retirement/provident fund, paid leave).

  • Funded CPD opportunities, scholarships, and ongoing in-service training to advance your critical care expertise.

  • Employee wellbeing programs (EAP, mental health resources, wellness initiatives).

  • Access to state-of-the-art ICU technology, protocols, and multidisciplinary support.
